Dr. Smith is also an author. She published Remote Perceptions with Hampton Roads Publishing Company. Her new book Shire was published by PublishAmerica in the fall of 2006 and her historical novel River of Passion was published by the same group in the spring of 2007. In November, 2010 Dr. Smith was ordained as a shamanic minister following decades of training and experience. She now works as a life coach and shamanic practitioner in Boulder City, NV.

Web Conference Microphone History and Evolution of the Study of Parapsychology

Abstract:
The modern field of study known as parapsychology emerged directly from 19th century "psychical research," which investigated phenomena such as telepathy and clairvoyance. The field became established over a century ago with the organization of the British Society for Psychical Research (SPR) whose goal was organized scholarly research of these topics. The American counterpart to the SPR was founded in 1885 in New York. Important Psi research was also conducted by the J. B. and Louisa Rhine at Duke University.

The general focus of Psi research has been arbitrarily subdivided into several categories. Two of the major categories are: extrasensory perception (ESP) which includes telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and retrocognition; and psychokinesis (PK) which includes the presumed effect of Psi on physical and biological systems. Current research on Psi is ongoing although funding has declined over the decades and many Psi labs have closed. The future of Psi research is uncertain but exciting new ventures have been emerging.

Dr. Smith has been involved in the Psi field since her participation with PRL and PEAR from the mid 80’s - - until the present time when she continues to be involved in Psi studies.

Web Conference Microphone Cultural Series, Part I: Reading the Rune Stones - Symbology as a Language

Abstract:
The word, rune, derives from Old English and Old Norse sources. The Old English word, run, meant a secret or a mystery.  Runes are ancient glyphs or symbols that were originally derived from simple Ogam or line writing. Runes were used as both a written language and a symbolic tool for divination purposes. Their knowledge was “lost in time” until the 17th century when runes were, once again studied as a tool for divination. Each of the ancient cultures: Germanic, Viking, Danish, Gothic, Swedish, Anglo-Saxon, and Norwegian cultures developed unique sets of symbols or futhark that can be used by the modern student as tools to develop their intuitive abilities.

Dr. Smith’s experience with runes began in 1980 prior to her immigration to the United States. Her first set was a Saxon futhark and she continued to be trained in additional traditions. Her favorite runes were learned from P.M.H. Atwater, “The Goddess Runes”, which involve casting and reading.  She uses the Ralph Blum interpretation of the runes to supplement her remote viewing work.

Web Conference Microphone Cultural Series, Part II: Shamanism - "The Respected Practitioner"

Abstract:
The term shaman came into English usage from the language of the Siberian Tungus.  A shamanic practitioner voluntarily alters his or her state of consciousness and the shaman's practice is socially-sanctioned by their community. Shamans carry out their practice through some of the following activities: reveries that transmit the thoughts of another person; through dreams where they are aware of faraway events; through rituals, which may predict future happenings; and through practices to produce desired effects on distant physical objects or living organisms such as healing. Such journeys are generally undertaken to help other people, usually members of the shaman’s community.

After a lifetime of participation in shamanic studies, some at the graduate level with Dr. Stanley Krippner and Dr, Ruth Inge-Heinze, Dr. Smith became an ordained shamanic minister in 2010. She incorporates her shamanic experience into her life coaching practice and continues to train in shamanic work.

Web Conference Microphone Psychokinesis (PK) and Anomalous Perturbation

Abstract:
Psychokinesis - - “movement from the mind” is often abbreviated as PK. The term was coined by Alexander N. Aksakof and Henry Holt and was adopted by Joseph Rhine who carried out much of the early PK research.  PK can be defined as “Direct influence of mind on a physical system that cannot be entirely accounted for by the mediation of any known physical energy.”  Other terms that have been used in place of PK have been Telekinesis or TK, Mind over Matter, Intentionality, Action at a Distance, Remote Influence or RI, Bio-influence, and Anomalous Perturbation.

Dr. Smith volunteered at the Psychophysical Research Laboratory (PRL) during 1986-1987 and worked as a member of staff at the PEAR Laboratory at Princeton University from 1998 through 1992 where she participated in PK research. Her personal experiences with PK have been documented by Dr. Pamela Rae Heath in “Mind-Matter Interaction.”

Web Conference Microphone Telepathy: Uncommonly Common Experiences

Abstract:
Telepathy has been defined as “mind-to-mind communication. Research into telepathy began in the Victorian era and was the mainstay of psychical research until the turn of the last century. With the advent of the psychological quest for behaviorist explanations, research into telepathy declined. Telepathy has now resurfaced as a topic under the umbrella term of ESP or Psi. Some skeptics even cite telepathy as an explanation for other Psi phenomena. Telepathy seems to be accepted by the public as a real phenomenon.

In the mid 1980s Dr. Smith participated as a volunteer at the Psychophysical Research Laboratory (PRL), took part in Psi Ganzfeld studies that measured telepathy between subjects and collaborated on a study that measured the handedness of Ganzfeld participants. At the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Laboratory Dr. Smith participated in Precognitive Remote Perception (PRP) studies.

Web Conference Microphone Human Consciousness

Abstract:
Like the concepts of love and life, the term consciousness is hard to define. It has as many definitions as there are disciplines trying to define the term. In medicine, consciousness can be measured by objective physiological scales and it is often defined as the state of being awake and active.  However, consciousness is much more complex depending on mood, diet, health, activity, and even time of day/night. And, just where does consciousness reside; in the brain or in some non-local location? And the big question: can consciousness function separately from the physical brain/mind?

Dr. Smith has a background in experimental and practical applications of human consciousness skills. In her undergraduate education during the 1970s she worked with consciousness pioneer Prof. Stuart Dimond at Cardiff University. She then proceeded to research the development of human consciousness/laterality at the University of Manchester and then at the UMDNJ in New Jersey.  At Saybrook Graduate School Dr. Smith studied with consciousness professor Dr. Stanley Krippner. Her Ph.D. Dissertation focused on human consciousness, PK and personality.

Web Conference Microphone Meditation Methods

Abstract:
Meditation is an Eastern tradition that gained great popularity in the West during the 1980s. Meditation creates a condition in which the individual becomes physically relaxed yet maintains an aware mental state. There are many different types of meditation and teachers but the most common method seeks to still the “chattering mind” to bring about a sense of inner peace and quiet. Research into meditation has shown it has physical as well as mental and emotional benefits: lowering blood pressure and easing stress.  Meditation has gained some credibility in the medical field for these reasons.

Dr. Smith was introduced to Buddhist meditation by Dr. Vladimir Zakian, a mathematician at Manchester University during the later 1980s. She practiced the discipline over the next few decades before incorporating it into her OBE and RV work. Dr. Smith now believes in creating “mindful” meditation experiences during work, play and exercise.

Web Conference Microphone Out-of-Body Experiences (OBE)

Abstract:
According to researchers, "An OBE is an experience in which a person seems to perceive the world from a location outside their physical body. In this state they can see and hear events and conversations that cannot be perceived from their actual physical location."  The senses and the mental faculties usually remain clear throughout the experience. It has been suggested by some that we all have OBEs during sleep. It is believed that about 1 in 20 people experience at least one OBE, if not more, during their lifetime. About one percent of the population has multiple OBEs over time and a smaller number learn to control their experiences.

A lifetime of Out-of-Body Experiences and participation in Ganzfeld and similar paranormal research has gained Dr. Smith the reputation as one of the few people having had repeated, controlled and validated OBEs.  Dr. Smith’s book “Remote Perceptions” documents her early forays and participation in paranormal research.

Web Conference Microphone Extended Remote Viewing (ERV)

Abstract:
Extended Remote Viewing (ERV) is another method of remote viewing used to access information about hidden real-life targets. ERV, in its simplest definition, is the access of hidden information using an altered state of consciousness. Extended Remote Viewing or ERV was developed at the Army’s Fort Meade Remote Viewing Unit by F. Holmes (Skip) Atwater. Currently, ERV has come to have a generic definition: any remote viewing that is done within a defined protocol in an altered state of consciousness. Most ERV sessions are guided by a monitor but some viewers are able to carry out solo ERV ... read more »
