The general meaning is: "God and man become one".

The Mental/Emotional symbol brings together the "brain and the body". It helps people to bring to the surface and release the mental/emotional causes of their problems.

Although generally practiced as a form of self-care, Reiki can be received from someone else and may be offered in a variety of health care settings, including medical offices, hospitals, and clinics. It can be practiced on its own or along with other CAM therapies or conventional medical treatments.

In a Reiki session, the client lies down or sits comfortably, fully clothed. The practitioner's hands are placed lightly on or just above the client's body, palms down, using a series of 12 to 15 different hand positions. Each position is held for about 2 to 5 minutes, or until the practitioner feels that the flow of energy—experienced as sensations such as heat or tingling in the hands—has slowed or stopped. The number of sessions depends on the health needs of the client. Typically, the practitioner delivers at least four sessions of 30 to 90 minutes each. The duration of Reiki sessions may be shorter in certain health care settings (for example, during surgery).

Practitioners with appropriate training may perform Reiki from a distance, that is, on clients who are not physically present in the office or clinic. (NCCAM)

I don’t know what happened that I began to notice that my hands felt funny. Tingly and warm. And then the soles of my feet began to feel funny. Not a pain or a burning, but a “swirly.” Yes, when I analyzed it, that’s right. “Swirly.” Definitely odd, and nothing I’d ever heard of before.

It’s been several years ago now, back when I was reading about anything and everything I could find about belief systems, Eastern and Western Medicines and metaphysics. I remember thinking that I needed to learn all I could because “this weird stuff is finding me whether I want it or not.”

Eventually I began reading about Reiki. Learning began and personal paradigms shifted. My favorite doodle in the whole world is like a vortex circling and often, without lifting the pen I would draw a line through it. I used to fill up margins of paper during class doodling those. What I was doing was drawing a near-perfect Cho Ku Rei and accessing the universal energy field. Eventually my energy centers opened of their own accord. Sometimes all it took for my hands to heat up was standing in line for coffee and see the cinnamon rolls with their swirled design. Before I studied Reiki I would have thought I was having a muscle twitch, or spasm in my abdomen (an odd place for that). Now I recognize that “punching out” sensation as excess energy clearing from my Original Ki in the Hara center.

Usually I take full advantage of a session, tucked in with warm blankets, my respirations so slow the practitioners swear I’m asleep. Far from it. I’m meditating, my mind drifting to ponder whatever enters it. Sometimes I feel wave-like sensations, especially at the start of a session or when the practitioner changes positions. Once, during a special session before I was scheduled for surgery I was fortunate enough to have two Reiki practitioners present, very grounded, spiritual women, powerful in their own hearts. Accustomed to Reiki practitioners changing positions, I felt the hair at the top of my head in the crown chakra area stand up and I thought “Oh, you’re back.” I thought one of them had changed positions and ws standing at my head. Lying with my eyes closed, tucked under the warm blankets and unbeknownst to me they were sitting in chairs, nowhere close to my head.

Reiki is often used as a means of reducing stress. Sometimes I feel peaceful and rested. Sometimes I’ve sobbed uncontrollably after a session, letting go of old hurts and burdens I didn’t need to carry around anymore. Come to think of it, I can never make it through a rendition of “Just As I Am” without crying either.

I’ve had Reiki sessions with several practitioners. Some use crystals, some use stones. Some light candles or incense. All play soft music and in one way or another offer themselves as servants, their hands for use by a Higher Power as instruments to aide in healing a dis-ease beyond their capacity to understand. They provide our cells with electrical components a different kind of nourishment: energy.

When I do Reiki, my hands heat up and tingle, I can feel an energy bouncing off the patient, like a shield of sorts. People say that they feel waves of heat that is soothing that covers their body. -MJ

What does it feel like? Good question! For me - the short answer is, "it depends."

The most important thing to note about Reiki, is that most folks expect, "thunder bolts" or to feel or see something dramatic (like what they see on bad TV shows or movies). Reiki, for me, is a very subtle (but powerful) energy that works with our own body's energy fields and makes the necessary energetic adjustments towards health.

There are times as a practitioner when I feel nothing unusual, beyond being in a very Zen, centered, open, meditative state. However my client says they feel something significant (i.e. tingling, warmth, relief from discomfort, etc.). What I notice during the times that I do feel Reiki in action depends upon the health and/or level of distress in the client. If the client is in significant distress, I feel significant energies flowing through me (and my hands) and into my client (i.e. temperature changes mixed with tingling or prickly feelings) If the client is experiencing mild discomforts, I tend to feel mild temperature changes mixed with mild tingly sensations. Using these energetic cues assists the Reiki practitioner to sense where the source of the client's discomfort may originate.

It is important to note that the source of the client's discomfort may not be "where" the client thinks it is. For example, the client may state their right knee is the source of the problem, when in actuality there is a problem with their left hip that has thrown off their gate (walking technique) and has caused the problem for their right knee, etc. For me, Reiki is a very subtle energy that is capable of working in tandem with our own body's energy fields to improve our physical, mental, and spiritual health -Miri

Here I go with my attempt to describe what I experience during a "Loving Chakra Cleansing" Session. It is very subtle, and yet powerfuI. And, what I do know - often much more is happening than any of us are aware of. When I am doing this work, I hope to serve as a "clear, pure and perfect channel" for whatever serves the highest and best and greatest good at that time for the individual.

I use crystals and stones during a session. Once all the stones are placed for the individual either under the chair or massage table and music is started, I silently invoke Divine Assistance. Immediately I feel the field of energy around me expanding. It often starts as the stones are being placed. As, the "work" progresses up each chakra, I feel inside me movement of energy in each chakra. Sometimes as the clearing begins it feels rhythmic like waves lapping at the beach; sometimes it feels quiet; sometimes it feels slow and sluggish. After each chakra is cleared, and then balanced with prayers, the movement in the (my) chakra may feel faster (a spiraling sensation) or quieter or rhythmic. I am aware of when the person’s chakra is becoming clear because the speed with which the clearing of the chakra occurs and the increase in the spiralling sensation in each chakra. I sense I am likely feeling their experience through the session, because in this space we are truly one.

When specific assistance is requested, I feel the energy shift and expand again...such as when the Major Archangels are asked to come. When the Cords of Light are taken back down through the chakras, I feel them as they move 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 into the pelvis, down the legs, out through the feet and into Mother Earth. I feel when they are being filled...much like filling a gas tank and when they are anchored and secured in the earth. Often my feet will feel firmly planted to the floor. I also feel when they are being returned from the Mother Earth back up and out through the crown, circling and enfolding the person into a wonderful cocoon of light.

What I have described is very often what I sense occuring during a "simple" clearing.

In the end, the receiver sometimes reports they have felt similar sensations...especially if they focus on releasing and clearing. Others report the people, dreams, visions and/or places they have traveled during the session. There are some people who report they had no experience. And, most everyone reports they feel calmer, peaceful, rested and often filled.

Recently, I had a session with someone I had never worked with before. After each portion of the session I would ask them to tell me what they experienced. I had know idea what they would tell me. And, I had never conducted the session in the way before. Without knowing what was occurring they provided these descriptions: when things were released that no longer served them...they reported weights being lifted off their shoulders. In another part of the clearing, I had asked for things to be burned and they reported they saw flames and again felt more open and free. -Mary

My Reiki mentorship began in 2005 under the tutelage of Reiki Master, Mrs. Edith R. Reiki is defined as a Japanese technique for stress relief and relaxation that promotes healing. Reiki is basically healing energy. Supernatural, spiritual energy, the life force energy that flows through each of us and is what causes us to be alive. Reiki is a technique taught by a Reiki master, known as attunement, where the student actually taps into the unlimited supply of life force energy.

What sensation/ambiance does the Reiki practitioner experience during a healing session? Personally, sensations range from sweating, overall body heat and immense emotions.

Personally, prior to any Reiki session, after smudging the room, I always ask my Holy Spirit to be with the recipient, to bless them, relieve them from physical and emotional pain and/or stress. Comforting, soothing native flute or spa music is quietly playing in the background. Occasionally I immediately get a sense, what area of the body to direct my concentration. The human body is filled with numerous chakras however, there are times I have to by-pass the chakra to get to the specific need of the receiver. Each Reiki practitioner has their own routine in sending Reiki throughout the body.

Session 1

Two years ago during a Reiki session with Edith I sensed she was deeply distressed. Not knowing initially the reason, I began to send Reiki through her body, beginning with her head. My hands immediately became intensely hot! The Holy Spirit told me, she was distressed over someone she knew.... As I proceeded in focusing attention to the chakras, I was directed to focus on her hands, then I began to cry. My body felt as if I had a fever.

I finished the Reiki session, which took about 45 minutes. In my mind I heard one word, "GO". At this point I still did not know the meaning of this but shared it with Edith. She began to cry and proceeded to tell me her close friend was in the hospital dying with cancer and felt helpless in her ability to heal her. In fact, Edith had given her friend Reiki many times to relieve the pain associated with the disease, but this dear friend had found no relief.

Immediately, Edith got up off the table went to be with her friend. Later that afternoon, after I arrived home, Edith called me. When she arrived at the hospital, her friends husband went to the cafeteria to eat, while Edith stayed with her friend. At this point, Edith touched her friends hand, spoke softly to her and within fifteen minutes, her friend passed away. Edith told me, she knew without a doubt the Holy Spirit had given me the word "GO" so she could see her friend one last time.

Edith has told me numerous times, Reiki goes where it is needed, even if we don't. The spirit will direct us what chakras need attention and we may never know the reason.

Session 2

April 2005

My beloved mother, Wanda, had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. After the removal of her infected, diseased breast, eleven lymph nodes under the arm, Mom was given the option of chemotherapy and/or radiation to kill any remaining sporadic cells within her body. Because my mother was the care giver of her elderly parents, she refused any further cancer treatment. Early 2000 my mother appeared to be in remission.

Mom and her second husband divorced late 2000. I was elated as she suffered much mental, emotional and I believe physical abuse at the hand of this monster and Life was normal until July 2004. Mom began to complain of headaches and bowel problems. After numerous trips to her doctor, tests results determined, her cancer had returned. This time with a vengeance! All I could do was cry and pray, in that order..

One September Saturday morning 2004, my mother went to the refrigerator, then collapsed on the floor. Thank God my niece Jessica was home with her. EMS was called and Mom was transported to the ER.

I arrived at the hospital within the hour of receiving the call from my niece. Mom was already undergoing tests, and immediately placed in Intensive Care. I called Edith and requested prayer and Reiki for Mom. It was at this point and time, Edith unbeknownst to me, began my Reiki attunement.

Mom's doctor came into the waiting room to give me the news... Her cancer had advanced to her brain and unless she had surgery immediately to remove the rumor, she would not live beyond two weeks. With surgery, six months. I am the oldest of four siblings and the only one at the hospital at the time and time was of the essence. After consulting with my siblings by phone we decided to go ahead with Mom's surgery to remove the monster within her brain. I was the one to sign her death sentence.

As the nurses prepped Mom for surgery, I began to pray and lay my hands on her body. Although at this point, I had no formal Reiki attunement or training, but believing in the power of the body's own healing and the power of my God, my Savior Jesus Christ, I knew Mom was in good hands, whatever the outcome. With the laying of hands, whatever power I didn't have to heal, the Reiki and the power of my God, I could be used as a vessel to bring comfort and love to my mother supernaturally.

Mom came through the surgery with flying colors, short lived of course. As I clutched tightly to the bag of dark brown hair, my emotions got the best of me. Prognosis was still terminal.

Mom regained consciousness two weeks later and was released from the hospital in late November in time for Thanksgiving. Momma ate Thanksgiving dinner in her hospital bed from her apartment while my sister Tracy and I agreed to take turns living with Mom to take care of her until she recovered. It was our faith in Jesus Christ that gave us that hope of recovery. Each day, Edith would send Mom and the entire family Reiki and by this time, we could feel it.

January 2005, I formally began my attunement with Edith.

February 2005... Momma was admitted once again to the hospital for bleeding, lack of control of body functions and mental clarity. Tracy and I stayed with Mom round the clock. Each day began with prayer, then the laying of hands, sending Reiki, the best I knew how.

Little did our family know, Momma would never again leave the hospital to come home.... or so we thought.... day after day, Reiki would either give me two sensations - excitement of any improvement in Mom's condition, or a sense of peace that she will be okay regardless.

At times, I felt heat, as though I was removing the disease from Mom's body... although Reiki does not do the healing... it is the energy... I do not heal, it is the intent of Reiki and prayer that heals and gets prayers answered.

Easter Sunday - March 2005.

The night before, I had gone home so I could attend an early Easter service at church with my family and grandbabies. About 11:00 A.M. I took Mom roses, and a small Easter basket.. She said to me "it sure would be nice to go to church"... six days later we were taking her to church, this time to say goodbye... Momma could not attend church for months, but she could now...

April 5, 2005

5:45 A.M.... Jesus came to get Momma..... All the reiki and prayers had been effective.... The Reiki healed her, the prayers healed her, but now in a new dimension... Now that healing energy from Reiki was needed to heal our family.

During this time, I could not understand why I could never give Reiki to myself... Edith disagreed. Each time you send / give Reiki, you get it back.... when you need it. Reiki gives the comfort to the receiver / situation when needed, but what is most wonderful about Reiki is not what it gives... It about what is taken away. That's what Reiki is to me... -Deb
