The Study of Intuition and Human Ability |
The study of intuition stretches across both time and the sciences. Patricia Benner, PhD., RN, utilizing Stuart and Hubert Dreyfus’ Five Stage Model of Skill Acquisition, became nursing’s gold standard regarding the study of skills development in the nursing profession. “From Novice to Expert Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice” leads us, through a progressive series of models and exemplars into a better understanding of human functioning using analytical tools and intuitive information gathering.
As delineated by Benner, this fifth level of competency, the Expert Role, is where mixing analytic tools and years of experience takes place and the transformative process of information-gathering occurs. Where, as she quotes Dreyfuss, (1977 p.12), “But with the mastery of the activity comes the transformation of the skill which is like the transformation that occurs when a blind person learns to use a cane. The beginner feels pressure in the palm of the hand which can be used to detect the presence of distant objects such as curbs. But with mastery the blind person no longer feels pressure in the palm of the hand, but simply feels the curb. The cane has become an extension of the body.” (p.33).
CardioMag and Magnetocardiography / MCGs are in FDA clinical trial. Their milestone of being able to physically measure and record electrical activity outside the thorax provides information regarding the previously unmeasureable “aura.” Controlled Remote Viewing shows that, as with any other practiced skill, individuals can provide sensory data from a blind target across time and space. These are but two of the sciences that are relatively unheard of unless you know where to look for them, or are able to speak their particular language once you find them. |
Sciences that are also often relegated to the fringes of acceptable study due to taboos.
I plan to write to Deborah Blum and thank her personally for stating in a recent interview on Skeptico - science at the tipping point: “‘This whole world exists that really those of us in the skeptic/science community never see because people just don’t tell you about it.’”
I know people who “see dead people.” I know people who see the electromagnetic field that is around our physical bodies and extends into the environment. I know people who can look at you and see your circulatory system whooshing as it moves through you. You stand next to these extraordinary human beings every day. Dr. Richard Cytowic gave us an inside look at “cross-wired” synesthetics on ABC News, but until we see a more gentle understanding of these extraordinary people, Ms. Blum is correct. They’ve learned what happens when they talk, and until we accept them as the extraordinary people that they are, they aren’t going to tell you about it.
Aesthetic Impact eNews and the web conferences are meant to be a gathering place for people to share a variety of information regarding human experiences, observations and ideas. Simply put, it is meant to be a think-tank, or global meet and greet. From these discussions could come the research needed to develop a better understanding of us as human holistic systems. Research funds aren’t allocated to silent researchers. I hope you will join us. We need you. All of you.
